Encapsulating the UAAP - Week 11

Rankings after the week's games:

Ateneo - Nothing to worry about (yet), the drama is off the court and Coach Norman Black made sure of it.
UST - Thanking the Bulldogs for getting them the twice-to-beat. Repayment will be ushering them out the door.
NU - Last 8 points of NU had the MVP's imprints on it.
La Salle - Are these Archers ready to step up when the chips are on the line?
FEU - Bert coaching for his job now?
Adamson - *slow claps* for Eric Camson, who should deserve all-UAAP nods.
UE - Imagine Boyzie with an offseason with this ragtag bunch, and add the hidden stash.
UP - Will Manny Dandan earn the chance to rebuild the Maroons while they determine if the Prodigal Son will be there next year.

What lies ahead:

Seniors

Wednesday @ Mall of Asia Arena: 4 P.M. De La Salle University vs Far Eastern University
Saturday @ SMART-Araneta Coliseum: 12 P.M. University of Santo Tomas vs National University / 4 P.M. Ateneo de Manila University vs De La Salle-Far Eastern University playoff winner.

Encapsulating the UAAP - Week 10

Credit to the owner of the photo.

Rankings after the week's games:

Ateneo - Finishes the regular season on the roost.
La Salle - All they need is to win, and they'll be in.
UST -Obviously, those who want to push for UST clearly need to reread FIBA rules. Still, it was a damn close game.
FEU - They get Mike Tolomia back, but is Arvie Bringas done?
NU - Needs to prove that the board room result was not in vain.
Adamson - Shooting the lights out, now they look to shoot for a spoiler role.
UE - Will Boyzie fulfill the destiny of creating mayhem? They have the toughest part, needing to beat UST.
UP - For a team with 8 graduating players, snagging one win is a really really disappointing thing.

What lies ahead:

Seniors

Thursday @ Mall of Asia Arena: 2 P.M. University of Santo Tomas vs University of the East / 4 P.M. Adamson vs De La Salle University
Sunday @ SMART-Araneta Coliseum: 4 P.M. Far Eastern University vs National University

Encapsulating the UAAP - Week 9

Credit to owner of photo
Rankings after the week's games:

Ateneo - Get well soon, JP Erram. See you next season on the court.
FEU - Shook off the boardroom drama by downing a Warrior.
UST - A chance at finishing on top is in sight, with the Ateneo devoid a big as the Cardiac Cats' biggest test left.
NU - They got their wish off the court. They'll have to, however, do their thing on the court.
La Salle - Chew on Almond and feed the Bear. That might be the recipe to tame a Tamaraw.
UE - Imagine if Boyzie Zamar was coaching this team since the start of the season.
Adamson - It's not Eric Camson's fault. That's what JP Erram said. He torched the champs for 26.
UP - Consolation for the Maroons? 9/22 is only a couple of weeks away.

Encapsulating the UAAP - Week 8

Thanks, Fabilioh.com

Rankings after the week's games:

Ateneo - Stamping its class. Clearly getting ready to prime themselves for the stretch run. Starting Ryan was masterstroke.
FEU - Really embarrassing performance by the Tamaraws against the champions.
UST - The schedule lightens up now. Time to take advantage.
La Salle - Joshua Webb only has one win in twelve Ateneo-La Salle meetings in the UAAP.
NU - Virtual knock-out game beckons against La Salle.
Adamson - Jericho Cruz is sensational. Watch out next year.
UE - Sumang-to-Javier drive and dish. Run to perfection. Boyzie Zamar has some tools to work with.
UP - That was truly an agonizing loss. The community is starving for a victory. The fight continues.

Encapsulating the UAAP - Week 7

c/o Pinoy Exchange

Rankings after the week's games:

FEU - Realized on their offensive potential first, then relied on sheer talent and veteran guile to dispatch the Falcons. Will need a combination of that to go over the Ateneo mental block.
Ateneo - From Coach Norman Black: “But honestly, I’m definitely not satisfied with the way we played. We did not play very intelligently as a team. And we also did not play as a team. With FEU and La Salle coming up, we definitely have to play a lot better if we want to win.”
UST - Jeric Fortuna is LA Tenorio-clutch. Aljon Mariano is money on iso. But they better make sure to avoid offensive droughts, like that Antarctic game against FEU.
La Salle - Kudos for the homage to the late Sec. Robredo. This definitely ain't the old Archers of the previous decade.
NU - Troy Rosario and Henry Betayene have emerged. Life after Mbe will be alright.
Adamson -  Just as I was praising Brondial, he then gets caught punching a guy, gets himself ejected, then suspended.  To Coach Leo Austria's credit, they scared their opposition, but other teams had better talent in the end.

UP - How long does it take to fix Chris Ball's paperwork? Look at how Alinko Mbah fared against Greg.
UE - New coach, same result for the Recto-based crew.

What lies ahead:

Wednesday @ Mall of Asia Arena - 12 NN (televised at 2 P.M.) University of Santo Tomas vs De La Salle University / 4 P.M. - Far Eastern University vs Ateneo de Manila

Thursday @ Mall of Asia Arena - 2 P.M. University of the East vs National University / 4 P.M. Adamson vs University of the Philippines

Sunday @ Mall of Asia Arena - 2 P.M. University of the Philippines vs University of the East / 4 P.M. Far Eastern University vs National University

Other basketball games scheduled:

Encapsulating the UAAP - Week 6

Rankings after the week's games:

UST - They earned their stay here, as Abdul and Fortuna make sure Coach Pido keeps his "chamba" run going.
Ateneo - Even with some new wrinkles being hurled at them, the Blue Eagles still figured it out.
FEU - Bert Flores must be having Ryan Buenafe flashbacks circa 2010. And they still haven't figured out JP Erram for two years running.
La Salle - They could have beaten the Bulldogs much earlier if not for their foul shooting. Kudos to Jeron for his scorching 35 points.
NU - Bright days may be in the horizon even with the double OT defeat, and it is not just because of Stephie Sy returning as their courtside reporter.
UP - Finally, good breaks went their way.

Adamson -  Rodney Brondial might be stating his case the best performing local big in the UAAP. Put a scare into the current co-leaders until they wilted in the final two minutes.
UE - Whatever positive vibe they had in their victory over the Falcons was undone with their defeat against a previously winless UP.

What lies ahead:

Thursday @ the Mall of Asia Arena - 2 P.M. - National University vs Adamson / 4 P.M. - University of Santo Tomas vs Far Eastern University

Saturday @ the Mall of Asia Arena - 2 P.M. - University of the East vs De La Salle University / 4 P.M. - Ateneo de Manila vs University of the Philippines

Sunday @ the SMART-Araneta Coliseum - 2 P.M. - Adamson vs Far Eastern University / 4 P.M. - University of Santo Tomas vs National University

Other basketball games scheduled:

Encapsulating the UAAP - Week 5

Rankings after the week's games:

UST - With the others idle (not because they wanted it to be in that situation), they made sure they stay on top.
Ateneo -Is rust going to be a factor? Good thing their opponents are facing the same issue.
NU - Need to translate the momentum from the last match into this one.
FEU - Is rust going to be a factor? Good thing their opponents are facing the same issue.
La Salle - The refrain still remains. Shooting. Foul. Shots.
Adamson - Gave the Archers their all. Just doomed in the end.
UP - Need to translate those close matches into something more soon
UE - Cannon fodder for opposition, but the easiest portion of the schedule looms.

What lies ahead:

Wednesday @ the Araneta Coliseum - 2 P.M. - University of the East vs Adamson / 4 P.M. - University of the Philippines vs University of Santo Tomas

Saturday @ the Araneta Coliseum - 12 nn (with 2 P.M. airing) - National University vs La Salle / 4 P.M. - Ateneo de Manila vs Far Eastern University

Sunday @ the Araneta Coliseum - 2 P.M. - University of Santo Tomas vs Adamson / 4 P.M. - University of the Philippines vs University of the East

Encapsulating the UAAP - Week 4

Thanks to Fabilioh.com

Rankings after the week's games:

UST - More cardiac action, thanks to double-OT. Hopefully, for their sake, less of that, considering their upcoming opposition.
Ateneo - Easy victories, but there are woes behind those victories. Can't have those woes against FEU.
NU -  A much-needed come-from-behind victory.
FEU -Shaky victory after an agonizing defeat. Not they way you'd like to face Ateneo in.
La Salle - Coach Gee must be having his players shoot a million foul shots.
UP - Keeping themselves close against the 2012 UAAP finalists? Who knew?
Adamson - It's the end of the road for Alex Nuyles.
UE - The fact that they were close for a half is more because Ateneo allowed it to happen.

What lies ahead:

Wednesday @ the Araneta Coliseum - 2 P.M La Salle vs Adamson; 4 P.M University of the East vs University of Santo Tomas Since been postponed as per the UAAP Board.

Saturday @ the PhilSports Arena - 2 P.M. University of Santo Tomas vs Adamson; 4 P.M National University vs La Salle Since has been postponed as per the UAAP Board

Sunday @ the Araneta Coliseum - 2 P.M. University of the Philippines vs University of the East; 4 P.M Ateneo de Manila vs Far Eastern University 2 P.M La Salle vs Adamson; 4 P.M. University of the East vs University of Santo Tomas (Original matches have been postponed and Wednesday's matches were moved to this date.)

Encapsulating the UAAP - Week 3

Thanks to Fabilioh.com

Rankings after the week's games:

UST - Character-building victory against a preseason darling. They earn their stay here.
Ateneo - Classic victory over its rival. Nothing to see here that we haven't seen before.
FEU - Escapes cardiac mode with smashing victory.

La Salle - LA Revilla is the motor that keeps them going. Can Coach Gee find a way to lessen his burden?
NU - Two easy blowouts, Getting blown out themselves, and now allowing someone to come back and beat you. What are the Bulldogs' true identity. Maybe the Tamaraws can answer this for us.
Adamson - Jericho Cruz is the successor of Alex Nuyles.
UP - Nice comeback, but allowing a hustle play on defense and awful final offensive execution killed the Maroons. With the finalists of the last couple of seasons coming this week, it's not looking good.

UE - Getting blown out by 26 is really ugly. And the champs are coming next.

What lies ahead:

Thursday @ the Araneta Coliseum - 2 P.M Ateneo de Manila vs University of the Philippines; 4 P.M National University vs Far Eastern University

Saturday @ the Mall of Asia Arena - 2 P.M. University of Santo Tomas vs De La Salle; 4 P.M University of the East vs Ateneo de Manila

Sunday @ the Mall of Asia Arena - 2 P.M. Far Eastern University vs University of the Philippines; 4 P.M Adamson University vs National University

Encapsulating the UAAP - Week 2

Thanks to sir Philip Sison of Fabilioh.com

Rankings after the week's games:

UST - Quite simply, the third quarter was it for the Growling Tigers against the defending champions.
Ateneo - Would definitely be unbeaten had they had a couple of more minutes against the Growling Tigers, but more than made up for it by embarrassing the hosts.
FEU - Unbeaten, yep, but both of their wins could have gone either way.
NU - So, are they overrated? Which is the fluke?
La Salle - Will holding LA Revilla out pay off this Saturday?
UP - long wait, no thanks to Ferdie
Adamson - ditto for them
UE - Is Roi Sumang going to reprise Paul Lee's final season for the Red Warriors?

What lies ahead:

Thursday (at the Araneta Coliseum) - 2 PM University of the Philippines vs National University; 4 PM Adamson University vs Far Eastern University

Saturday (at the Mall of Asia Arena) - 11 AM University of Santo Tomas vs National University; 4 PM De La Salle University vs Ateneo de Manila University

Sunday (at the Mall of Asia Arena) - 2 PM Far Eastern University vs University of the East; 4 PM University of the Philippines vs Adamson University

Encapsulating the UAAP - Week 1

Brief predictions: Ateneo to make it five-in-a-row. Ray Parks retains MVP title.

Useless Final Four Prediction: NU, Ateneo, FEU, La Salle.

My Preseason Picks for the All-UAAP 1st Team: Emmanuel Mbe (NU), Greg Slaughter (Ateneo), Ray Parks (NU), Alex Nuyles (Adamson) and Kiefer Ravena (Ateneo)

My Preseason Picks for the All-UAAP 2nd Team: Karim Abdul (UST), Norbert Torres (DLSU), Nico Salva (Ateneo), Jeron Teng (DLSU) and RR Garcia (FEU)

Rankings after the weekend games:

Ateneo - workman-like dismantling of the Falcons. Took a while to get themselves going, though.
NU - thorough annihilation of UE, protest notwithstanding.
FEU - come from behind win, anchored by the guard corps.
La Salle - Jeron Teng in the clutch, douses the comeback attempt. The inevitable Freshman of the Year.
UST - got the tools, but they got to remember to close it out.
UP - encouraging signs, but costly decisions did them in their near-comeback attempt.
Adamson - one thing for sure, Leo Austria will maximize everything he can get from his crew.
UE - long season for Jerry Codinera. He might possibly have better tools this Wednesday as the playing coach of the PBA Legends.

What lies ahead:

Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum - Ateneo vs UST at 2pm, UE vs La Salle at 4pm.

Saturday at the MOA Arena - UE vs Adamson at 2pm, UP vs UST at 4pm.

Sunday at the MOA Arena - FEU vs La Salle at 2pm, Ateneo vs NU at 4pm.

UAAP Season 75 Opening Schedule Set

Can't wait for the UAAP? The opening weekend for men's basketball has been released.

The upcoming season, which will be dubbed as "Unbreakable at 75" (obviously a play on the UAAP celebrating its diamond season of existence) will once again be shown live on Studio 23.

Newly-minted Fil-Oil Preseason Champions National University will be kicking things off against the University of the East on July 14 at 2 p.m, while the losing finalists for the past two seasons, Far Eastern University will be facing reigning overall champions University of Santo Tomas at 4 p.m.

The next day will feature the new-look De La Salle University, boosted by the arrival of coach Gee Abanilla and true freshman Jeron Teng, against the University of the Philippines at 2 p.m, followed by the reigning UAAP men's basketball champions, the Ateneo de Manila University facing off against the only team that beat them last season, the Adamson University Soaring Falcons at 4 p.m.

Both matches will be at brand-spanking-new MOA Arena.

Revisiting The UAAP Season 74 Preview

Taken from the Philippine Daily Inquirer

With the regular season ending, it's appropriate to look back at how I fared in trying to figure out the season.

I posted this in the middle of July. The breakdown after the jump.

Explaining the 2011 UAAP Postseason

The final two playdates of the UAAP Season 74 are this weekend. The postseason cast is set. The only thing that needs to be settled is the format. If you don't know how, it's relatively simple.

Ateneo - 13-0
Adamson - 9-4
UST - 8-5
FEU - 8-5

Final games of the UAAP regular season:

UP vs UE
Adamson vs Ateneo

NU vs UST
La Salle vs FEU

The Soaring Falcons can formally book their 2nd place finish if they beat Ateneo, something they can do for the first time since the Fidel V. Ramos administration. If they fail to do so, Ateneo seals their regular season sweep, the third in the history of the UAAP since the Final Four format (UST in 1993, UE in 2007). That then would open the possibility for FEU and UST to grab said 2nd slot and force a playoff against Adamson with that on the line..

Here are the scenarios involving the Tamaraws and the Growling Tigers:

If both win: Triple tie, with FEU taking fourth due to their quotient, AdU and UST fight for 2nd.
If either win: Tied with Adamson, force playoff, loser faces FEU in knockout.
If neither win: no playoff necessary. UST vs FEU knockout, winner faces a twice-to-beat Adamson. Winner then faces a thrice-to-beat Ateneo.

Get it? Got it? Good.

Enjoy postseason basketball in the UAAP. All heart. All out.

The UAAP 2011 mini-preview

Thanks to PhilStar for this picture

Another year has passed and the collegiate scene beckons again. And again I am late in posting the UAAP preview for the upcoming season. The first playdate has been completed and the four remaining teams will get got theirs in last Thursday.

Here lies my brief thoughts on the upcoming ongoing UAAP Season.

UAAP Season 73 1st Round post-script

After 1 round robin, let's look into each UAAP team:

EDIT: Records indicate are as of end of 1st round, even though FEU already lost to Adamson and UE beat UST to kick off the second round.

1. Far Eastern University (7-0) - They are showing why they are the prohibitive favorites for this season. And so far, no off-the-court shenanigans

Surprise: How RR Garcia is the top MVP candidate after the 1st round. I thought it would be Aldrech, but he is not that far behind.

Disappointment: Hard to find flaws in an unbeaten team, but I did expect more from Cawaling, Cervantes and Sanga, especially since they are the veterans of the team.

End of eliminations prediction: 12-2

Wish: A Pipo Noundou jersey

2. Ateneo de Manila University (5-2) - The defending champs are still alright. They lose their three key cogs of their championship runs, and they still among the top teams. Speaks well of how good Coach Norman Black is.

Surprise: Juami Tiongson is already showing that he has the chops to start at the point next season. Frank Golla developing into a quality big. Justin Chua making the next step.

Disappointment: The loss to La Salle really hurt. Inconsistencies with Nico Salva & Ryan Buenafe. Still having slow starts.

End of eliminations prediction: 11-3

Wish: That Nike gets it right with the uniform design.

3. Adamson University (5-2) - Last year's heartbreak team is now everyone's trendy sleeper. And their record shows it.

Surprise: Lester Alvarez is arguably the best PG in the UAAP right now. We saw him come off the bench last year. Now, he is the engine that keeps Coach Leo Austria's offense going.

Disappointment: That they still have not yet beaten Ateneo since their return from the Marlou Aquino-induced suspension

End of eliminations prediction: 10-4

Wish: That it is already Mike Galinato's final year. Hard to believe he and Japeth Aguilar were teammates in high school.

 4. De La Salle University (4-3) - The surprise of the season so far. The team is composed of mostly newcomers and second-year players with a new head coach was supposed to be good next season. Had they beat the Falcons in their final 1st round assignment, they would be sitting pretty at second place.

Surprise: How this squad has not been as annoying as the previous incarnations of the squad over the past few years. No Arana antics, etc... Even Joshua Webb.

Disappointment: That there is no cure to Tayshaun Andrada in HD.

End of eliminations prediction: 8-6

Wish: More minutes for Ferdinand.

5. National University (3-4) - If not La Salle, they are the surprise team this season.

Surprise: How Eric Gonzales somewhat kept this NU team from reverting to its past tendencies. Their depth at the bigs is a little underrated.

Disappointment: That in 2011, the much hyped-recruit named Norman Penola will be wearing Bulldog colors instead of the Blue and the White

End of eliminations prediction: 8-6

Wish: More monickers like Jerome "the Umbrella Man" Tungcul

6. University of Santo Tomas (3-4) - They were pegged to finish 8th this season, but their hustle and aggressive Pidoffense keeping them in 6th place.

Surprise: That they can still score in bunches even in losing the MVP. You can thank their firecracking PG duo of Jeric Fortuna and Clark Bautista for that.

Disappointment: Jeric Teng was expected to make huge offensive contirbutions, but has not really done that yet. Then again, he has a huge workload on his plate.

End of eliminations prediction: 7-7

Wish: That we appreciate what Chris Camus does. You'd love him as a teammate.

7. University of the East (1-6) - Stumbled early, but ended okay with a win against UP and a close loss to Ateneo.

Surprise: Ken Acibar stepping to try to fill the huge shoes left by Elmer Espiritu and Pari Llagas. Paul Lee quickly recovering from a injury to be the marked man all season long.

Disappointment: Lucas Tagarda's attempts to be annoying.

End of eliminations prediction: 4-10

Wish: Lawrence Chiongson to suddenly transform into Alfrancis Chua

8. University of the Philippines (0-7) - Quite easily the most disappointing team right now. Supposed to be pegged to figure in the Final Four race, they are halfway from being 0-14 again.

Surprise: How UP decided to suddenly pull the plug on the Aboy Castro experience.

Disappointment: Where do we start? No fluidity from the guards. The regression / plateauing of Woody Co. UP fan apathy.

End of eliminations prediction: 1-13

Wish: To see UP win a game starting next week.
