On UST - NU (UST with twice-to-beat edge)

1. Karim Abdul vs Emmanuel John Mbe. Great Gatorade duel in the making. Both players invaluable for their offensive output in the low post.

2. Kevin Ferrer's defense on Rayray Parks. The UAAP MVP will be a handful, and the former Tiger Cub will be UST's first option to try to stop him from stuffing the stat sheet.

3. NU PG play. Endgame execution is key, and that means both Alolino and Rono need to keep things steady.

On Ateneo-La Salle (Ateneo with twice-to-beat edge)

1. Archer big consistency. Norbert Torres and Arnold Van Opstal were huge in the fourth quarter in the playoff game against the Bringas brothers, Escoto and Hargrove. They'll need to be at par with that against Ateneo, if not, then Yutien Andrada, Papot Paredes and Jovet Mendoza need to step up.

2. Perimeter shooting. La Salle won't be shooting that bad again from there, right? Vosotros, Revilla and Teng can't be atrocious for two straight game. Ateneo is not known to shoot well from distance as well.

3. Ryan Buenafe. He lives for these kind of moments. Against La Salle, in the postseason, when the chips are down..

Ateneo - Nothing to worry about (yet), the drama is off the court and Coach Norman Black made sure of it.

UST - Thanking the Bulldogs for getting them the twice-to-beat. Repayment will be ushering them out the door.

NU - Last 8 points of NU had the MVP's imprints on it.

La Salle - Are these Archers ready to step up when the chips are on the line?

FEU - Bert coaching for his job now?
Adamson - *slow claps* for Eric Camson, who should deserve all-UAAP nods.
UE - Imagine Boyzie with an offseason with this ragtag bunch, and add the hidden stash.
UP - Will Manny Dandan earn the chance to rebuild the Maroons while they determine if the Prodigal Son will be there next year.

UST -Obviously, those who want to push for UST clearly need to reread FIBA rules. Still, it was a damn close game.

FEU - They get Mike Tolomia back, but is Arvie Bringas done?
NU - Needs to prove that the board room result was not in vain.
Adamson - Shooting the lights out, now they look to shoot for a spoiler role.
UE - Will Boyzie fulfill the destiny of creating mayhem? They have the toughest part, needing to beat UST.
UP - For a team with 8 graduating players, snagging one win is a really really disappointing thing.

There is more drama in the UAAP, thanks to this sequence.



The ruling on the field is that the shot counted. A few days later...

“Because of the pieces of evidences/statements/video used in the deliberation were inconclusive and unclear and most of the points brought up showed that time had expired before the ball was fully released, the UAAP Board unanimously upheld the appeal of NU for a replay of the game that is scheduled on Sept. 23, 2012” - Henry Atayde (DLSU), Member of the UAAP Technical Committee

NU’s Junel Baculi, a member of the technical committee, inhibited himself from the meeting, for obvious reasons.

To put things in perspective: Nothing has changed. NU still has the tougher close-out schedule. They still have La Salle and Ateneo on tap (on consecutive playdates to boot), with a UP team that wants to give its 8 graduating players a winning send-off. Now tack on that FEU game. From the looks of things, a 9-5 record might be the win-loss standing being toted by the 4th place team, whoever that will be.

I said that the NU appeal has merit, but I have questions with regards to the decision on replaying the whole game. Ideally, they should have both teams play the OT on either of the two playdates that have both teams on it: September 13 or 16.

Then again, this would have been avoided had RR passed it quickly to a wide-open Anthony Hargrove on that helter-skelter sequence.

FEU - Realized on their offensive potential first, then relied on sheer talent and veteran guile to dispatch the Falcons. Will need a combination of that to go over the Ateneo mental block.
Ateneo - From Coach Norman Black: “But honestly, I’m definitely not satisfied with the way we played. We did not play very intelligently as a team. And we also did not play as a team. With FEU and La Salle coming up, we definitely have to play a lot better if we want to win.”
UST - Jeric Fortuna is LA Tenorio-clutch. Aljon Mariano is money on iso. But they better make sure to avoid offensive droughts, like that Antarctic game against FEU.
La Salle - Kudos for the homage to the late Sec. Robredo. This definitely ain't the old Archers of the previous decade.
NU - Troy Rosario and Henry Betayene have emerged. Life after Mbe will be alright.
Adamson -  Just as I was praising Brondial, he then gets caught punching a guy, gets himself ejected, then suspended.  To Coach Leo Austria's credit, they scared their opposition, but other teams had better talent in the end.

UP - How long does it take to fix Chris Ball's paperwork? Look at how Alinko Mbah fared against Greg.
UE - New coach, same result for the Recto-based crew.

For those who are interested, the UAAP Cheerdance Competition is scheduled on September 22 at the Mall of Asia Arena. If there are ties at the end of the 2nd with playoff implications, it is to be broken on September 23. If there are none, that same day will be set for the Final Four.

Rankings after the week's games:

UST - They earned their stay here, as Abdul and Fortuna make sure Coach Pido keeps his "chamba" run going.
Ateneo - Even with some new wrinkles being hurled at them, the Blue Eagles still figured it out.
FEU - Bert Flores must be having Ryan Buenafe flashbacks circa 2010. And they still haven't figured out JP Erram for two years running.
La Salle - They could have beaten the Bulldogs much earlier if not for their foul shooting. Kudos to Jeron for his scorching 35 points.
NU - Bright days may be in the horizon even with the double OT defeat, and it is not just because of Stephie Sy returning as their courtside reporter.
UP - Finally, good breaks went their way.

Adamson -  Rodney Brondial might be stating his case the best performing local big in the UAAP. Put a scare into the current co-leaders until they wilted in the final two minutes.
UE - Whatever positive vibe they had in their victory over the Falcons was undone with their defeat against a previously winless UP.

Ateneo - Easy victories, but there are woes behind those victories. Can't have those woes against FEU.
NU -  A much-needed come-from-behind victory.
FEU -Shaky victory after an agonizing defeat. Not they way you'd like to face Ateneo in.
La Salle - Coach Gee must be having his players shoot a million foul shots.
UP - Keeping themselves close against the 2012 UAAP finalists? Who knew?
Adamson - It's the end of the road for Alex Nuyles.
UE - The fact that they were close for a half is more because Ateneo allowed it to happen.

Ateneo - Classic victory over its rival. Nothing to see here that we haven't seen before.
FEU - Escapes cardiac mode with smashing victory.

La Salle - LA Revilla is the motor that keeps them going. Can Coach Gee find a way to lessen his burden?
NU - Two easy blowouts, Getting blown out themselves, and now allowing someone to come back and beat you. What are the Bulldogs' true identity. Maybe the Tamaraws can answer this for us.
Adamson - Jericho Cruz is the successor of Alex Nuyles.
UP - Nice comeback, but allowing a hustle play on defense and awful final offensive execution killed the Maroons. With the finalists of the last couple of seasons coming this week, it's not looking good.

UE - Getting blown out by 26 is really ugly. And the champs are coming next.

Ateneo - Would definitely be unbeaten had they had a couple of more minutes against the Growling Tigers, but more than made up for it by embarrassing the hosts.
FEU - Unbeaten, yep, but both of their wins could have gone either way.
NU - So, are they overrated? Which is the fluke?
La Salle - Will holding LA Revilla out pay off this Saturday?

Rankings after the weekend games:

Ateneo - workman-like dismantling of the Falcons. Took a while to get themselves going, though.
NU - thorough annihilation of UE, protest notwithstanding.
FEU - come from behind win, anchored by the guard corps.
La Salle - Jeron Teng in the clutch, douses the comeback attempt. The inevitable Freshman of the Year.
UST - got the tools, but they got to remember to close it out.
UP - encouraging signs, but costly decisions did them in their near-comeback attempt.
Adamson - one thing for sure, Leo Austria will maximize everything he can get from his crew.
UE - long season for Jerry Codinera. He might possibly have better tools this Wednesday as the playing coach of the PBA Legends.

UAAP Season 75 Opening Schedule Set

Can't wait for the UAAP? The opening weekend for men's basketball has been released.

The upcoming season, which will be dubbed as "Unbreakable at 75" (obviously a play on the UAAP celebrating its diamond season of existence) will once again be shown live on Studio 23.

Newly-minted Fil-Oil Preseason Champions National University will be kicking things off against the University of the East on July 14 at 2 p.m, while the losing finalists for the past two seasons, Far Eastern University will be facing reigning overall champions University of Santo Tomas at 4 p.m.

The next day will feature the new-look De La Salle University, boosted by the arrival of coach Gee Abanilla and true freshman Jeron Teng, against the University of the Philippines at 2 p.m, followed by the reigning UAAP men's basketball champions, the Ateneo de Manila University facing off against the only team that beat them last season, the Adamson University Soaring Falcons at 4 p.m.

Both matches will be at brand-spanking-new MOA Arena.

Another year has passed and the collegiate scene beckons again. And again I am late in posting the UAAP preview for the upcoming season. The first playdate has been completed and the four remaining teams will get got theirs in last Thursday.

Here lies my brief thoughts on the upcoming ongoing UAAP Season.
