Philippines falls short in AFC U-19 Women's Campaign

The Philippines' Under-19 women's team missed out on the quest to advance in the AFC Women's U-19 competition, finishing third in the qualifiers held on October 17-21 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The ladies began the tournament on a high note, winning against Hong Kong, 2-0. The goals came from Jean Bridgette Kadil and Christina de los Reyes. The Filipinas dominated their Hong Kong counterparts, with the scoreline not reflecting their performance. They were unable to convert from their plentiful opportunities in the first half, but Kadil and de los Reyes's goals proved to be enough to secure the full three points.

A couple of days later, they faced a Myanmar side fresh from a 3-1 win against Chinese-Taipei. The Filipinas never got on track, with missed opportunities for the hosts, while the visitors managed to put up 17 shots on goal en route to a 4-0 victory. The Filipinas also committed defensive lapses that their opponents took advantage. These two wins ensured the 2013 SEAG hosts officially book their entry into next phase of qualification, something they definitively showed in their final qualification match, a 8-0 win over Hong Kong.

The Philippines still had a chance to advance, but they will need to win in their final match against Chinese-Taipei, who had bounced back with a 5-0 win over Hong Kong a couple of days earlier. It was unfortunate for the hosts that Chinese-Taipei scored the only goal of the match on a lob by Pan Yen Hsin over Inna Palacios in the 35th minute. There were plentiful opportunities for the Filipinas to find an equalizer, but chances from the likes of de los Reyes and Camille Rodriguez were stopped by the defense.

Myanmar and Chinese-Taipei now join Jordan, Iran, Uzbekistan and India in the next phase of qualification to take place at Vietnam in early December. Joining the six qualifiers are the hosts as well as Thailand. From the eight entrants in the 2nd round of qualification, only one nation will emerge to join Japan, DPR Korea, Korea Republic, China and Australia to determine the AFC's representatives in the FIFA Women's U-20 World Cup, which Canada is to host in 2014.
